Quinney Computer labs are not USU supported open-access labs. These labs are funded by a gift provided by the S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney Foundation in Salt Lake City, Utah. Much of the hardware and software in the labs have been provided to aid in the educational pursuits of the College of Natural Resources student. Because of these considerations, only verifiable CNR students are entitled to use these facilities.
Lab Admission Requirements:
Current CNR users will be provided with an account after validation by the registrar’s office that they have declared CNR status. Visit the registration page for information on obtaining an account. All users will need to repeat this process each semester.
A temporary account, approved by the systems administrator and the class instructor, is available for those students with a current CNR class. Guest accounts will be required for anyone using the labs for special events.
Lab Policies
1. Only software owned by or licensed to Utah State University shall reside on Quinney lab computers. You may use all the programs installed on the computers, but you may not download or install new software onto the machines. If you need a specific piece of software for academic purposes, please send email to the administrator.
2. You may use your account network storage or save to an USB or external disk. Your account comes with 100MB of data space. This disk space will be purged once per semester. We are not responsible for any lost data.
3. You may not share your username or password with another user, and you may not use your network account to log another person into a lab computer, even if that person is a trusted friend or family member.
4. Equipment is first come, first served, and cannot be reserved. Please do not attempt to reserve a computer by leaving your belongings around it. If a station is left unattended for 15 minutes or more, Quinney Library staff may log you out of the computer, move your belongings, and another user may have access to the computer. Academic work takes precedence over all other uses of the lab, including but not limited to games, chatting, email, or web surfing. A user engaged in non-academic activity may be asked to give up their computer to allow another user to carry out legitimate academic work.
5. The consumption of foods and beverages, including bottled water and candy, is prohibited in both labs at all times.
6. Use of the computer facilities should not hamper or interfere with the ability of other students to do academic work. Avoid excessive computer volume, loud conversation or laughter, use of offensive language, and other disruptive behavior. Those using the facilities should work quietly.
7. The computer labs are primarily independent facilities. Users are responsible for learning the skills necessary to use the computer applications. Visit http://qclbox.nr.usu.edu to get information about how to use the computer, software, and security.
8. Please do not leave your personal belongings unattended. Library staff is not responsible for lost, stolen, or moved items. It is your responsibility to keep your own property safe and secure. Lost & found items are stored for a short period of time at the circulation desk on the 1st floor.
9. Please do not reconfigure computers, personalize desktops, or alter another user's files. Please do not move computers or tamper with their cables. Observe good personal hygiene and leave you keyboard, mouse, monitor, and workstation clean and free of trash.
10. Be courteous to your fellow lab patrons by turning off your cell phone ringer, and by taking all personal conversations and/or cell phone calls outside the lab.
11. Viewing of pornography or other sexually explicit materials in the lab is not appropriate. If you have legitimate academic need for viewing such materials (as verified by your instructor), please ask a staff member about arranging a more private location.
12. Be wary of emails with links. Viruses, hoaxes, phishing, and chain letters purposely or unintentionally sent will result in the permanent disabling of your account.
Violations of the Policy
Users are responsible for ethical use of all computer resources, including both honesty in their academic pursuits and respect for others who share these resources. Loud conversations and disruptive behavior disturb others who are trying to do academic work. Persons who are disruptive in computer lab facilities will be asked to leave immediately. Campus security may be summoned if a user poses a threat to the safety of the facility. Repeated incidents of disruptive or harassing behavior will result in loss of computer use privileges.
Disciplinary actions for violating any provisions of these policies shall be governed by the applicable provision of the Code of Student Conduct found in the USU Student Handbook. Sanctions for violation of these policies may include revocation or suspension of computer access privileges. Deliberate attempts to degrade of disrupt computer labs will be viewed at criminal activity.
Note: The use of these resources is governed by the College of Natural Resources. The systems administrator may monitor access to any of these resources in order to ensure security of its systems and networks and to enforce policies.
