Compiled Responses for Exit Questionnaires for 2000-2001

1. Strengths and weaknesses of the University General Education requirements.

A.Should be more computer and speech /writing classes

B.Strengths - Broad, general education. Weakness - If any, not enough diversity

C.The General Education classes need to be looked at for valuable content for Natural Resources classes. There should be certain classes available and these classes should be fair enough for the students to still do well, but not used to weed out others.

D.N/A - took all generals at CSI

E.Some classes provide very little info. most part the requirements are valid

F.Blank

G.Can't remember too long ago

H.Strengths - gain a good general overview of a variety of subjects

2. Strengths and weaknesses of the College of Natural Resources Core requirements (NR 1130, 2220, 2340, 3000, 3600, 4000 ).

A.Should be more computer and speech/writing classes

B.Good classes - broad general classes. Weakness - more indepth specialized classes would be helpful to specialize

C.I enjoyed NR 3000, 3600, & 4000. These were the most information based classes. The others, I felt they were there just to take. A lot of the information in the 3000,3600 & 4000 were more practical to the purposes of my major. The most useful course I feel is NR 3600, I learned more about the statistics of the Natural Resources than I did in an actual stats course.

D.2220 - Ecology class was a good class that introduced me to environmental issues.

2340 - I really did not get much out of this class - too long and generalized

3000 - Great class. The importance of NR management was introduced and helped in later classes.

3600 - Good class that helped me learn how to interpret quantitative aspects of NR mgt. It helped "drill" statistics into my head.

4000 - Except for being too short for all the info, this class was great & helped introduce the economics and policy of NR mngt.

E.Good classes, good diversity, based on Ges, good professors 3000, 36000, 4000 especially good some repetition of basic information

F.Some of the classes covered the same topics over and over. I only needed those once.

The human dimension to wildlife management was covered well

G.Some inconsistencies when varying profs teach them

Repetition

H.Strengths - gave a good overview of N.R. management. Also these classes brought a lot of different majors together in a learning atmosphere. Weaknesses - too broad of classes and usually the classes repeated the other classes. Too general and not specific enough for good learning.

3. Strengths and weaknesses of the Fisheries and Wildlife major requirements.

A. These need to integrate your own data collection and analysis with the modern techniques and computer technology

B. Need more classes to specialize. More in-depth

C. I thought all courses give a good base. I feel that some sort of internship should be required for valuable experience.

D. The F&W classes were all good classes. I learned more than I could have imagined.

E. F&W requirements are good, most classes provide good information and have good instructors. Some course instructors seemed too focused on their own work instead of the class. Switches in requirements was confusing.

F. Each class was good in the specifics of the field it covered. I would have like more field techniques involved in the classes.

G. Good hands on stuff.

H. Strengths - very in depth classes. Professors were very knowledgeable on the lecture material. Classes complemented each other.

4. Which Fisheries and Wildlife course(s) most stimulated your interest in higher education? How?

A. Blank

B. Fish (Luecke) and Wildlife (Gilbert) Diversity classes. Wildlife populations (Ritchie). Gave me the confidence that I can be a wildlife professional.

C. Wildlife management lab - this let me see that everything that I was learning actually is used. This allowed hands on experiences versus just reading it out of the text books.

D. Wildlife Diversity - my knowledge of animals (terrestrial and aquatic) was vague until I took this class.

Wildlife Mgt. Labs - hands on procedures & importance of proper tech. was discussed.

Wildlife Behavior - I learned a bunch and still want to know more through research & testing - as to why animals behave the way they do.

E. Population and Behavior were both very good classes. Lab classes, terrestrial lab were worthwhile.

F. Fish Diversity

Aquatic Ecology

G. FW 5100 Wildlife Techn. Schmidt

H. FW 3100 - Fish Diversity

It stimulated because of the way the class was taught. Chris presented research that had been done in the fisheries field and made me want to do my own research.

5. Which Fisheries and Wildlife course(s) most informed you about natural resources and environmental management?

A. FW 5200

B. 3400, 3000, 5400, 4000, 2200

C. Wildlife management lab, NR 3000, NR 4000

D. Wildlife Behavior, all NR classes (3000 & 4000), Fish Diversity, Wildlife Mgt. Lab

E. Wildlife Damage Management was a good broad course. Wayne Wurtsbaugh's limnology class was also good.

F. Each class touched that area in it's own way.

G. Blank

H. NR 3000. This class was taught by Fred Provenza. He had us write a paper a week on various NR issues in management and the environment. The papers allowed me the opportunity to read and think about the various issues.

6. Were your Fisheries and Wildlife courses:

A. Available in a logical, progressive sequence?

A. Yes

B. No - had to take out of sequence. Some classes conflicted times, especially labs.

C. Yes they were, but I am the first to say that I didn't take them in a logical sequence, mainly in the way that I could fit them in my schedule.

D. They were to me only because I had all the math, biology, chemistry, & physics classes done before I transferred.

E. Yes

F. because I transferred it was a little different for me.

G. Yes

H. Yes

B. Non-redundant in content and subject matter?

D. The scheduling of classes so they do not conflict as much. I did not get to take a few classes (electives) because of conflicts w/required or not required classes.

E. Blank

F. I would like more field work. More emphasis on getting undergraduates projects to work on. Those schools are excelling in NR areas have their undergraduates almost every one of them, doing undergrad research.

G. Blank

H. Do away with the NR core classes and just make one class for the NR core. Because of these

classes overlapping to much and were to broad of subject material.

8. Strengths and weaknesses of advising procedures. Did you meet regularly with your advisor? Were you aware of curriculum changes and scheduling conflicts? If not, why not?

13. Any other observations or comments on your experience in Fisheries and Wildlife? Please be specific in comments about courses/advisors/professors/students/policies etc.

A. Blank

B. Some of the best experiences I had were in lab settings, learning in the field.

C. I think a requirement to do some sort of internship would be very valuable for the student such as me. Having an experience would definetly be of help for me to find a job.

D. The courses were great and challenging. The advisors were hard to get ahold of at times - (except mine!) Professors were very good when they were in class. One problem I found was graduate students teaching a lot of the classes while professors were doing research. I understand this college is a research college but I am paying a ton of money to be taught by a professor, not a student.

E. Classes were with mandatory field trips should have this requirement listed in the catalog. This is an unfair practice and should not be reasonably expected of students who have numerous obligations.

F. I believe the fisheries program is great here. Theo other area thats good is the Wildlife Damage. But, mammals, Bird work and the other areas seem a little weaker as for as on the edge of the research fields.

A. Blank

B. It was overall rewarding

C. I enjoyed my college career and hope and hope to return and get a PhD if possible. I have enjoyed the majority of my classes and have received some valuable information and background. I feel that here should have been more concentration on job placement and helping graduating seniors to find a good job

D. I mentioned everything in previous questions. If I had to end with one last comment, it would be that the College of Natural Resources has a great program & I am curious as to what is going to change with the Re-organization that is being done this summer (?). I came to USU because of the good program. I turned down Uof I, MSU, Uof M and ISU because USU had a strong CNR. I hope nothing changes to make this great Reputation diminish.
