1.         Strengths and weaknesses of the University General Education requirements.

A)        Math was good, biology was worthless, chemistry 2 was worthless. Breadth classes were good. Not enough English taught (i.e. technical writing). Physics was good.

B)        Good allaround exposure to topics of interest but Biology not relavent. Lab experience useful though Ecology ? useful background concepts. Fund. of Soils too. I mostly completed my Gen. Ed at extension, and before I declared.

C)        Transferred

D)        Classes too large.

E)        Math department needs better teachers and tutoring sessions. Other classes are sufficient.

2.         Strengths and weaknesses of departmental courses required for your degree.

A)        There was no required genetics course ? surprising. Too much emphasis placed on local and /or regional case studies ? I learned nothing of marine fisheries or ecosystems other than that of high desert. Cooperative education with (USFS, DWR) was good and helpful. (off to side of answer) Not enough GIS either.

B)        S Fundamentals of soil, S Climate Change (excellent), S Fluvial Lab very hands on and useful techniques, S GIS, S FW Ecology and Practicum, W STATS 3000 (too much "useless" info), S Hum. Dem of N.R. Management ? good.

C)        I thought required courses were great, maybe needs more quantitative or applied courses. Maybe even require senior project type thing.

D)        3700 - good intro. Should be required for all NR majors. 4490 - Good. More lab needed. 4930 - Not enough application. 5150/70 - As good or as bad as you want it to be. 4500 - Good needs more labs. 4530 ? Good, but need reorganization. 3750- too much theory. 4980 - Good overview of water.

E)        The majority of the courses are very well taught and they support other classes. Water law and policy should be exchanged for a more pertonant class.

3.         Strengths and weaknesses of courses offered by other departments.

A)        Not enough of them! Requiring so many "particulars" (BSS, BHA, CI, DSS, DHA, etc.) limited the flexibility that students should have when chosing their own electives.

B)        Phyx 2210 - a lot more than I needed. I had to take higher levels of Biology and Chemisrty. If we could take a Biology more relevant to our college, it would be more worthwhile. But the lab experience is worthwhile.

C)        Blank

D)        Soil 3000 - Too easy, didn't learn much. Biology 1210/1220, Chem 1210/1220, Math 1210/1220, Phyx 2210/2220 ? good background, necessary fou ndation for water scientist and keeps options open for careers and grad school. Geol 3200 ? field trips good, course a little weak. Geol 3600 ? Great class and lab! Watershed majors should take this. Hist. 3950, soc 4620 ? Good for social aspect. No science. Wasn't interesting to me. ENVS 5320 ? Pointless class. Zneeds more law and less fluff. Unnecessary for science majors. Geol 5510 ? Great overview of GW. Needs a lab w/ class.

E)        Classes outside at the NR were sufficient for needs. Family Finance was very helpful.

4.         Which FW, GEOG, or AWER course(s) most stimulated your interest in higher education? How?

A)             DID                                                DIDN'T

AWER 3000    informative               AWER 4510     waste

FRWS 3900          and                      AWER 4490        of

AWER 5640    interesting                AWER 5330       time

      AWER 5550                                     ENVS 4000

B)        FW Ecology practicum really got me interested in research. I enjoyed climate change very much. It seems students in W.S. are relevant to take "Social" classes (Human Dem of NR Magment) but I think they helped me learn more about the policy/science interface.

C)        Small watershed hydrology, Fliuvial Geomorph. Fresh water ecology.

D)        AWER 5150/5120 ? Jack is an academic and encouraged students to strive for the power of knowledge in science.

E)        Fluvial geomorphology, GIS and climatology.

5.         Which FW, GEOG, or AWER course(s) most informed you about natural resources and environmental management?

A)  (an arrow pointed from the answer in four to the space provided for 5. it said, "Same list applies here.")         DID                                                DIDN'T

             AWER 4930                                      AWER 4490

             AWER 4650                                      ENVS 4000

                         AWER 3100/3110

B)        HD of NR Mangement (Dale) ? N.R. Society was good "setup" for this class. Salmoind F and H in Forest and Rangeland Mangement (Jeff). S. WS. Mangemtn (Mike) - Analysis. Water Quality and Pollution ? practical experience and Project presentation.

C)        Water quality and pollution.

D)        USU 1340/NR 2340 or AWER 4530.

E)        Vegatation management, large river management, and wildland fauna.

6.         What courses should the department drop from its course offerings?  Why?

A)        AWER 4490 - Everything I learned in this class I had already learned in Phyx 2220Y Everything else, I've long since forgotten.

AWER 4510 - This class seemed to be just an excuse for the Professor and TA to further their own career by adding to their publication credentials.

B)        I think the restructure of my degree requirements has eliminated the problem of "useless" classes. I think I was exposed to a wide range of info in W.S.

C)        None

D)        ENVS 5320 Theoretical Policy is not needed for AWER majors, especially Wtshd. Course needs restructuring.

E)        You shouldn't drop this but you should get one professor to teach fundamentals or watershed. I did not get much out of it because of the various people teaching sparatically the class.

7.         What new courses would you like to see offered?

A)        A continuation of GIS (AWER 4930) that is NOT remote sensing. Everything these days is GIS ? I've used (and had to learn on my own) more GIS skills than anything else that I've learned here @ USU.

B)        More policy - management - science interface classes. Or How to apply the science to management or how to apply the policy to mangement at the same time.

C)        More hydrology, and about physical science classes.

D)        Applied remote sensing instead of theory would be much more useful. Wetlands. More hydro classes. Some sort of NR/Stats class.

E)        More classes that are really hands on. I liked fluvial geomorphology because I got our in the field and worked. Hands on learning.

8.         Strengths and weaknesses of advising procedures.  Did you meet regularly with your advisor?  Were you aware of curriculum changes and scheduling conflicts?  If not, why not?

A)        Advisors are difficult to get a hold of. It frequently seemed that unless you were doing research for the department or advisor, you were ignored or not appreciated. I met far more often with Maureen and Kristy, because they were caring, helpful, and always available.

B)        I started on my major as the requirements were changing. Though at times confusing, overall it was pretty smooth and Maureen and Chris L. worked with me as the requirements solidified. Only real problem was I took remote sensing before climate change. Wouldn't advise anyone to do that! I think the change of requirements to the better.

C)        Blank

D)        Advising was super.

E)        I did met regularly with my advisor and it was helpful. They were extremely helpful in making any corrections for curriculum changes as with scheduling conflicts.

9.         Were the departmental & college staff helpful?  Please explain.

A)        Yes ? friendly, courteous, informative, and professional. AWER secretaries were/are better than those in other departments.

B)        YES! Maureen is a lifesaver. Enid and Gals in Chris L. office very helpful. Overall, everyone helped and cared about ME!

C)        Yes

D)        Yes ? all faculty and staff willing to help students. Good coordination between grads/undergrads.

E)        The majority of the department and college staff were helpful in continuing my education. The few who weren't, i.e. systems administrator, simply were a hinderence.

9.         Were you active in student groups such as the AFS student chapters?  Was this a valuable experience?

A)        NO ? AFS is too "professional" as an organization. They overlook the finer points of the AWER department. What AFS offers, I can get in classes. Other groups, yes; TWS, SAF, ECOS, and student council ? theses groups do not forget who makes the groups up: NON?PROFESSIONALS!

B)        No, but I attended a lot of Wed. afternoon seminars, ecology center and water initives (engineering building) too.

C)        No

D)        Not active

E)        No, I wasn't active in student groups.

10.       Did you find employment within the College?  If so, was it helpful in your educational program?

A)        NO ? work for undergraduates is limited to grunt work for professors and grad students. Repetitive, minimum wage jobs were not on my priority list for my four years here. These jobs were not challenging or fun, either. I was a rhetoric associate, however, a job that was challenging, fun, and paid well!

B)        I found employment last summer w/ USDA FS. Biotech here in Logan thru USU, CNR (Maureen's office). Very helpful and "looks good on resume". It was very helpful to work in Natl. Resources field job in summer especially financially. Also interesting to work for USDA FS, as I never have. Ps. Also worked/ summer hydrotech BLM, in Moab. But I found that job myself. Currently apply for professional position with Nat'l Resources Conservation Service (UACD?) in Logan

C)        Yes, and was probably the most influential part of my education.

D)        Yes ? for two different professors. I was able to work in labs, the arctic, and Antarctic all as an undergrad. Incredible experiences both personally and professionally.

E)        I did not find employment within the college.

11.       Any other observations or comments on your experience in the Department of Aquatic, Watershed, & Earth Resources, and as a major in Fisheries and Wildlife, Watershed and Earth Systems or Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences?  Please be specific in comments about courses/advisors/professors/students/policies etc.

A)        There is a large disconnect between AWER and other departments in the CNR. There is a larger disconnect between professors and students in AWER and the other departments as well. Losing Dean Busby is a shame, because he represented the epitome of what a good faculty?student relationship should be. For all those concerned, look to him as an example!

B)        Maureen is the glue of the college! I have really learned a lot about W.S. and F. W. Ecology. I have improved my Power Point Presentation skills (started at 0% base) I struggled with Exell, and finally feel more competent. A "Help" person up at quinney comp. Lab could have helped a bunch. Jack Schmidt has high expectations for his FL. Geom cource, but after a lot of work you come away with an understanding of process and problems associated with Stream Restoration.Wayne Wurts also has high expectations, but I learned a lot about writing and reading research paspers. Also Pwr Pt. Presentations.

C)        I know the AWER department is relatively small, but I think its important to mention balance in courses offered relative to disciplines. Maybe integrate some hydrolic engineering classes, etc.

D)        Many degree names should be made simpler. A degree in "watershed science" often brings up more questions than answers. At the same time innoctive, interdisciplinary programs are needed in NR, especially water. Degree could be "water resources"? Clubs should be science oriented not social. Social interactions can come through learning. WYSHD science should be intesrate more w/ engineers departments. Thanks to all professors, advisors, and students in the college/department.

19.       Any other comments about your experience in the Department, the College, or University.

A)        I realize my comments may learn to the negative, but their significance, in my eye, outweighs the Many other positive points of the CNR and AWER department. There are many good classes, professors, and advisors in AWER, and I consider the education I receives to be top?notch. Thanks!

B)        I enjoyed Fee as Dean, a lot. I am very pleased w/ my experience here on campus. And at CNR especially.
